Denver's Piles

(Denver's Piles)

People can fondly remember Denver Pyle, "Uncle Jesse" from The Dukes of Hazzard. More crudely, "piles" are another name for hemorrhoids. The Colorado Supreme Court, in a vote 4-3, just dropped leading Republican contender Donald Trump from the state Primary Ballot. The justification used was a Section of the 14th Amendment, Section 3 specifically that precludes anyone that "took part in an insurrection."

What insurrection might one be referring ? January 6th ? Was that the Capitol Hill riot, that was over by that afternoon ? The one that did not prevent the Inauguration of Joe Biden proceeded apace. Donald Trump was out of Office and on his way into exile. Until he apparently is making a return. Horror of horrors, Donald Trump could be elected President. Again.

The Colorado Supreme Court is doing its best to prevent that eventuality. And of course, the Trump Campaign is appealing the ruling but the whole thing is absurd. Never before in the contemporary times has a major Presidential Candidate been forced off a state's primary contest over charges of which he was never convicted. The January 6th events in question were hardly severe enough but they did apparently provide an excuse for Colorado to reach the decision they did.

Which will probably not stand when examined by the Supreme Court, that is having the case fast-tracked. The basic truth is that Colorado, and other states that might follow, expelling Trump from their own Primaries. However, what about all those who were going to vote for the former President, in Colorado or elsewhere.

"The Republic does not belong to the people" apparently was a comment from the Colorado Court. The "people" might vote for Donald Trump again and that is a risk many are not willing to take. In any event, any Colorado Primary could be a moot point as the state GOP might be moving to a Caucus, like Iowa. Trump's remaining Republican competitors are also aware that the same thing could happen to them, though they'll still play catch-up.

But Trump is the threat now. And, whenever there can be an end run made somewhere, like at Colorado's High Court ruling to keep Trump out, like indicting him, the opportunity is taken. The question to answer, however, is it will it work ?
