Races To The Sea. . .

(Races To The Sea. . .)

Since the "Guns of August" opened up on the Western Front in 1914, the German Army had been marching, first through Belgium and then through France. The British and French armies were steadily forced south. It was decided for the Allies to make a stand on the Marne River. On September 6th-12th, in the First Battle of the Marne, the Germans were halted and forced to withdraw. What followed was what is called the "Race to the Sea." As the Germans fell back, the Allies attempted in turn to turn the German flank and the Germans tried to do the same. Both efforts came to a halt when the English Channel was reached. Over the next three years or so, a system of trenches developed in a line that stretched some 475 miles from the Channel to the Swiss Border.

What does any of this have to do with anything ? Remember the 2000 Bush Gore Election ? The one with the hanging chads and so on ? The vote count in Florida for Bush was questionable ? The Gore Campaign sued but the initial verdict was in favor of Texas Governor Bush. The Gore camp appealed to the Florida Supreme Court, which were comprised of Democrats. The Bush team appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and that ruling went in favor of Bush. With that ruling, the vote count in Florida was suspended and Bush was declared the winner in Florida, and therefore the Presidency. With that result, NBC's host of Meet the Press at the time Tim Russert, made the comment that "Republicans controlled the mechanisms in Florida allowing for Bush's certification.

So, it was a "race to the sea" in a sense. Decision, appeal, decision, appeal and so on. The reverse of this of course is, in New York, where Democrats hold the mechanics of power and they used it to effect in getting the former President convicted on 34 counts. The trial was not fair. The Judge was biased. The jury was all but rigged. Witnesses for the defense were not allowed.

Of course, all this will possibly be reversed on appeal, but any action on that front won't be till after the Election. Has Trump been seriously damaged by this episode ? Current Republican fundraising has seen a spike in recent days. But, with the guilty verdict, what Trump might gain fiduciary, he will probably lose in votes. The sentence to be announced on July 11th to determine Trump's fate.

What about the Republican Convention ? How will it look if a convicted felon is up accepting the GOP Nomination ?  This was all by design and one must also remember that the former President is facing charges in three other jurisdictions, all under Democrat control, though they will not be adjudicated till after the Election.

There have been endless comments of how Trump's verdict was a "sad day for America" and "unprecedented" and so on. At the same time, the point continues to be missed. This trial, and all the others, had to happen. Trump's real crime is that he is running for election against Joe Biden and while the latter might or might not be wholly aware, but Democrats, in their own "race to the sea," convicted Donald Trump.
