Cheap Chinese
(Cheap Chinese)
Artificial Intelligence will be the doom of mankind. With national efforts to develop the technology, competing interests, like China, will invariably cloud the issue. There is a new Chinese App :DeepSeek that is promising artificial intelligence on the cheap. While massive nuclear-powered data centers are envisaged to dot the United States, the Peoples' Republic has a free application for any smart phone with AI capability. Tech markets, especially the NASDAQ are selling on this news.
Elsewhere, President Trump got the Columbia government to reverse its decision to not accept any of illegal migrants that are getting deported from the United States. Trump has also re-instated members of the Armed Forces, restoring rank and pay, for those who refused the vaccine. On the eighty-eight thousand IRS agents, President Trump will either terminate them or send them to the border. All in a day's work.
However, this news out of China is a reflection that the Peoples' Republic is also developing AI and if it is indeed comparable to American technology. In 1949, it was discovered that the Soviet Union had nuclear capability. Over the next four years, it will be the relationship with Beijing that will be most critical and who plays the AI will gain the advantage.
That being said, in times past, Soviet capabilities were sometimes over-estimated. There was the perceived missile gap that compelled the West to spend billions on defenses that in the long run were proven un-necessary. That will not necessarily be the case here. But if any worse case scenario, that DeepSeek proves the better alternative, and it begins to capture market share, there should be a counter-reaction.
As long as the private sector takes the lead. This endeavor has to have the smallest government footprint. The tendency in Washington to over-involve itself but its time would be better served if, Congress especially. A gauntlet has been thrown, however. And cheap Chinese, regardless of source, is never good.
