Happy Warriors
(Happy Warriors)
In June, 1940, France was forced to capitulate to the Germans. In a campaign that lasted just over six weeks, French armies were defeated in the field, the British Expeditionary Force fled the Continent in humiliation in the Dunkirk Evacuation. Adolf Hitler, ever the dramatic, wanted the French Representatives to receive der Fürher's terms in the same railway car with which Marshal Foch presented his own terms to the Germans in 1918.
If a comparison to Hitler can be made, Trump has spent these last few days, dictating terms. Under normal circumstances, root canal is less painful. Between President Trump viewing destruction in both North Carolina and then California, and then having Pete Hegseth confirmed as the next Defense Secretary, barely, it has been a full first week for the President. Trump had dismissed some 17 Inspectors Generals as being redundant. When he was in California, he was able to school Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass when he was at a firehouse as she tried to defend her policies that contributed in some fashion to the fire. In the meeting in Los Angeles with Mayor Bass and several Congresspeople, Democrat and Republican, Their policies had been described by the President as perhaps outdated, and the President made it clear that the California recovery will not be frustrating permit acquisition.
Bass and her colleagues did not look comfortable. They were being scolded by one whom they did not vote. They did not appreciate his suggestions. But Trump at least was in the room for over an hour and he took questions from all sources. Unlike his predecessor who could barely hold two thoughts.
Like the Democrats in Los Angeles, so three Senate Republicans, Senators Collins, McConnell and Murkowski voted "No" in confirming Pete Hegseth to the Pentagon. These are the usual suspects and those legislators that have never been enthusiastic about the Trump Administration nor those with which he means to staff. The changes anticipated across all Departments will be profound and far reaching. Assuming Hegseth completes his own term at the Pentagon now to what it will be in 2029, time will tell.
As mentioned, this has been Trump's first week in Office. Those he has confronted in this brief interval can take solace in the fact that he only has four years.
