There is a cycle in sports, regardless of league. The phases can be as followed. Some franchise, NFL, NBA, MLB and so on, if the team is at the bottom in the win-loss column, new talent, either from the collegiate level or the Minors when it comes to Major Leagues. A team is put together, with the right coach, games can be won, up to and including championships. But what happens after ? The starters retire, or they might graduate. As the talent ages, gets old and decrepit, games are not being won anymore. A team's fortunes deteriorate and with losing records, one returns to the lottery. Sometimes, however, one just assume leave the whole program and not stay to see the depressing process of re-constitution. That would seem to the plan for Speaker (soon to be former) Nancy Pelosi. Her team lost. She has chosen self-imposed exile in that she has announced she will not campaign for Minority leadership.


What about the other "team ?" Republicans will control the House with, at the barest majority of, at the moment, 222 seats. As there are still races to be decided, that number could still be adjusted. That being said, what will the new House Republican Conference, under the Speakership of Kevin McCarthy, Republicans will be in Office next January and it is said that there will be a new set of ideas. Like securing the border. Like making the Trump tax cuts permanent. To open domestic energy production. To NOT fund the IRS at the levels requested by the Biden Administration. And so on.


One thing that will also happen will be the inevitable investigation into President Biden and his family. Now, the Democrat Congress impeached President Donald Trump three times on a gimmick. A Republican investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden could yield actual malfeasance. An actual impeachable offense, something that would rise to the level of a "high crime." Will this be an expectation going forward ? A house changes parties and the target immediately becomes the President of the other Party ?


Republicans will be all the new Committee Chair-People. They will be holding hearings and receiving testimony. Anybody who has seen C-SPAN knows how this works. Now. a lot of new Republican freshman Congresspeople. One thing they will learn in short order is that all the Democrats, or what's left of them, are that the enemy ? To one of the more senior members, who knows better, the real enemy, is the Senate. Over the next two years, it will be interesting to see how true that will be over the next two years.

TEQUILA !

(TEQUILA !) Happy Cinco de Mayo or May 5th. One can hope that a lot of you out there are awash in inebriation, seeking to mainline tequila shots or enjoying a nice margarita on the patio. Or, in other words, relax. Take a breath. De-compress. May 5th as it happens is the anniversary of Mexico's victory over French "occupation" of Mexico by Emperor Maximillian, brother to Austrian monarch Maria Theresa in what has been called the Battle of Puebla. The reason France was in Mexico in the first place was that Mexico, after the Mexican-American War and a more civil conflict called the Reform War, had bankrupted Mexico City. Mexican President at the time was Benito Juarez, who repudiated all foreign debt, of which France, Spain, and the United Kingdom were all major holders. Intended Consequences

(Intended Consequences) For those Readers who live in the Tri-State area, who had the earthquake this morning, just be still.  There is a postulate called the Law of Un-Intended Consequences. Basically, it says that even with the best intentions, negative results sometimes happen. However, there are also instances when a negative result is precisely the desired outcome. Like with the Israel- Hamas war where the Biden Administration continues to press for an all but unilateral ceasefire on the part of Israel. In California, the new $20/HR minimum wage is wreaking havoc on the fast food industry. And finally, after depleting the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, oil has now become too expensive. How many times must the Biden Administration think it can influence Israeli affairs ? How many times must Israel ignore it.
