Big Chills

(Big Chills)

Baby, it was cold outside ! Merry post-Christmas. One can see the pictures of Buffalo, not to mention everywhere else, and one can see it had been quite the cold spell. What is that saying, a chill runs through the veins ? The Good News is that the "season" is almost over and what began at Halloween and proceeded to Thanksgiving and then Christmas, with all the food, drink and what was probably excessive merriment, all that is left is New Years, and after that, exactly what it is. The new year.

As it always happens, however, 2023 will be looking a lot like 2022, but with added questions. Will there be a recession ? That Omnibus is about to be signed into law and all its spending will do nothing to curb inflation and indeed will make things worse. The Russo-Ukraine War will be a year old in February with tens of thousands of casualties. Elon Musk still needs to find a replacement if he is really leaving Twitter. Ostensibly, Republicans will be in charge in the House but their leadership team is yet to be determined. And all this is just on a Tuesday.

Over the previous days, it has been these topics that have been in the news and commentary in these pages. What more needs to be said about the ill effects of this spending will be ? How much wisdom, or indeed a lack thereof, went into constructing this 4000+ page monstrosity that no one read. If Washington were any further detached, it would be as an amputation. Remember, the Mountain did not go to Mohammad.

Fires will continue to burn as long as there is fuel. That $45 billion allotment to fund the Ukraine War would not be considered fire retardant and one would hope the House displays more fiscal sanity. The best that can be hoped for at this point is a stalemate. By December 1914, a stalemate had settled on the Western Front in World War I and the long nightmare of trench warfare had arrived. Is the Ukraine now to be darted with long ditches from the Danube to the Don ? Recent Russian reverses, including a Ukrainian attack on a Russian air base, make ending the conflict that much more imperative.

Elon Musk is like Donald Trump, needs constant limelight. Now whether he leaves Twitter or not remains to be seen (at least he is not to be indicted like Trump). So-called Twitter "dumps" are sill being released and gradually exposing the entire infrastructure/nexus of the Justice Department, Big Media and Big Tech to alter peoples' perceptions to swing the 2020 Election. Not only was Trump removed from Office, he is also now going to jail.

And, assuming there is a Speaker come January 3rd, House Republicans, will begin to make its mark. Their agenda is known and will be acted upon in short order. That means securing the border as much as might be possible. That would mean a return to energy independence. It will also mean hearings and investigations into the Bidens.

All this. Tomorrow is Wednesday.
