If there was any mandate to come from the recently passed Mid-Term, it would be that Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), in order to become Speaker of the House not follow his opposite in the Senate, Minority Leader McConnell.  McConnell's recent activity has been well described here and his shortcomings as an advocate for the Republican cause is wanting. Now, too often, once one gets into Office, more often than not a "pivot" takes place, where a defining ideology evolves into a so-called more reasoned position. If Congressman McCarthy takes these stances once he has the Gavel, then all the Conference ambition, the entire GOP agenda, could be compromised.

The opposition to McCarthy becoming Speaker stems from more conservative members who are determined to see that the Republican program gets enacted. If any prospective Speaker McCarthy begins to waver in some regard, if he becomes too friendly with Republicans in the Senate, then there will be those elements within the Conference that would demand his ouster. The process is known as "vacating the Chair."

In the past, only Conference leadership could present a motion to vacate. In an effort to placate more conservative members, McCarthy has offered a rule change where any member could make a motion to vacate. In the next Congress, that means 222 House Republicans. The question now becomes will such an accommodation for McCarthy to gain requisite support to become Speaker ?

Just to keep McCarthy honest ? For years there have been too many GOP wannabees who never truly ascribed to conservative principles. It is the self-serving approach where electoral chances can be dependent on whether it is an "R" after one's name. A "Republican" district tends to vote Republican. One can smile and kiss babies and rail against the Biden Administration. But, the next step defines a who is more than some base politician.
