Over That Seventh Hill

(Over That Seventh Hill)

Ancient Rome, the Eternal City, was constructed on seven hills along the Tiber River in Italy, among the more famous are Vatican, current residence of the Holy See, and perhaps Palatine, from which the term "palace" gets derived. For centuries, that city rose from a simple settlement to become masters of the Known World. But, all things come to an end and Rome proved no different. Germanic migrations from the East eventually overwhelmed the overextended Roman Empire by a point in the Fifth Century and Rome itself succumbed, "barbarians streaming over that Seventh Hill.

Like all the illegal immigration coming across the southern border. Literally, barbarians at the gate. Now, one can expect a fresh influx of migrants once the formality of Title 42's expiration. As there has been a massive influx of aliens already over the past almost two years, with 42 gone, what remaining restriction will have been removed and the new numbers in the aftermath are expected to be increased greatly.

Rome did have its own wall. It did not stem the barbarian flow in the end but the situation on the border is different. The Roman Emperor at the time was the feckless Honorius. As Visigoths made their way down the Italian Peninsula, what was left of the once vaunted Roman Army was able to offer only token resistance. It goes without saying that this terminal campaign of the Roman world.

In contrast to Emperor Honorius, however, President Biden is in the position where the "barbarians" are actually being invited and is even rebuffing efforts of border authorities to add some measure of security. In Texas, where actual border wall construction is continuing after making arrangements with area property owners. In Arizona, a series of freight cars have been stacked along the frontier.

The Biden Administration will not fund the Texas wall construction and has ordered Arizona to remove the railway cars as they have been parked on federal land. Is the Presidential preference to have as little, if not any border security, just to advantage Democrats ? Are all the fentanyl deaths nationwide mere collateral damage ?

History was not kind to Honorius but at least he had the sense to attempt Rome' defense. If President Biden has no such inclination for this country, what will be history's judgement on him ?
