Level 42 was one of those ubiquitous pop bands from the 1980's, like Howard Jones or Scritty Polity. Remember them ? Anyhow, Level 42 was one of those one hit wonders with a chart-topping single "Something About You." The band released one other song was released but after that, Level 42 disbanded.

Title 42, on the other hand, is getting more confusing. This had been the directive that had been emplaced by the Trump Administration to keep people with covid from entering the country. As it had been an impediment to immigration, one would think that the policy's termination would allow for a whole new wave of illegal immigrants, Administration preference.

That being said, the Supreme Court has just voted 5-4 to keep the policy in place, truncating what was believed to be a mad rush for the frontier. The remain in Mexico order is still in effect. Now, as ironic as it might seem, the Administration could actually see a benefit from this stay because the anticipated thousands of people in a rush that would only exacerbate the President's image problem.

Now, oral arguments will be presented to the Court next year. What will be the government's case ? If the pandemic is over, then the only logic for keeping Forty-Two in place is to curb immigration. But the Title has not been about covid for some time. It was always less about preventing disease entering the country and more that this had been a President Trump policy. So, like not building a wall, the lifting of Title 42 was supposed to enhance the flow of migrants.

What is being argued at the Supreme Court, then ? The case is being argued because changing the status of Forty-Two has political overtones. Ending or keeping the practice in part determines the level of immigration and by extension, all the consequences that an un-fettered flow of humanity can cause, Title 42 was always a gimmick. One more point of contention for those who want a secure border, and those, looking for free rein.
