Bench Warrants. . .

(Bench Warrants. . .)

Could somebody explain the constant need to re-hash or re-boot something ? In the entertainment industry especially, one vehicle proves profitable or is otherwise a hit so there is an immediate urge to replicate that magic. At times, that has resulted in success. In others, one could get a sequel that should not have been made. That is apparently what the new Night Court is attempting and what has been revealed so far seems that the new show will fall short.

The original ran from 1984 to 1992 and starred Harry Anderson (deceased) as Judge Harry Stone. John Larroquette played Prosecutor and over-sexed weasel with a heart of gold, Dan Fielding. Eventually, after various cast changes, Public Defender Christine Sullivan was played by Markie Post (also deceased). Add Charlie Robinson as Mac Robinson, Stone's clerk, and bailiffs Bull Shannon, played by Richard Moll and eventually Marsha Warfield.

Now, here is where the new outing goes wrong, Larroquette is the only original cast member but Dan Fielding is now the Public Defender. Charles Robinson could return as could Richard Moll, who is almost seven feet tall and was quite the spectacle as a courtroom bailiff. The point being that if NBC wants to maximize its audience, older as well as new fans, restoring more aspects of the original,

Now, suppose that is President Biden that stands before the bench of this "new" Judge Stone (played by Melissa Rauch, Harry's daughter). Biden stands accused of mis-handling classified documents, having such material in three non-secure locations. Of course, now, Dan Fielding is the Public Defender. Could he elicit the so-called "Corvett Defense ?" That admittedly some of these sensitive documents were kept in the same garage as his classic muscle and that it was usually locked.

Prosecution of the President in this case and context, is Assistant District Attorney "Olivia," played by India de Beaufort. She will be the one reading the charges and Judge Stone will take Biden's plea. Maybe Biden can cut a deal for a reduction in charges. Whimsy aside and whatever can be demonstrated as to the contents, the revelations of their presence has compromised the President in some manner. Any comparative allowances to Trump's situation notwithstanding.

The new Night Court will rise or fall on how funny it chooses to be. One can remember that the original was originally cancelled because it got stale, the writing deteriorated and the viewership fell. That probably not be the case in this examination of these Biden papers. The Pentagon Papers could prove less relevant.
