(Mission Creep)

Sometimes one is presented with a fresh jar of cookies. Chocolate chip or some other flavor. The temptation is there to consume the confections and possibly more than one. However, that might one full before dinner. But a craving is a craving so one can just as easily say to Hell with supper and just pig out on the cookies.


Mission creep can be defined as eating too many chocolate chip or whatever, where the smarter course would be to wait for dinner. And, if one likes spaghetti and one likes spaghetti as much as the cookies, well, what is one to do ? World War I started with eating cookies before realizing broader implications. Same thing with the follow-on. Korea. Vietnam, and so on. Problems arose when there is the collective realization that something benign like raiding a cookie jar becomes serious like a war that gets out of control.


Now, there are varying reports of the extent to American involvement in the Ukraine. To date. that support has been fiduciary as well as various weapons that have been influencing events on the ground. Now, there are some reports from that set of leaked documents, that there are now American "boots on the ground," namely special forces and that type of thing. The compromised information also gave a more "realistic" appraisal of the Ukrainian situation on the ground.


Will the Biden Administration keep escalating and committing further American assets in theater ? It cannot be lost that this is election season though the event is still over a year out. Is President Biden now embracing the role of a war-time Chief Executive because it might enhance his polling position ? The last President who was thinking anything like this was Lyndon Johnson. What proved to be his Epitaph ?

TEQUILA !

(TEQUILA !) Happy Cinco de Mayo or May 5th. One can hope that a lot of you out there are awash in inebriation, seeking to mainline tequila shots or enjoying a nice margarita on the patio. Or, in other words, relax. Take a breath. De-compress. May 5th as it happens is the anniversary of Mexico's victory over French "occupation" of Mexico by Emperor Maximillian, brother to Austrian monarch Maria Theresa in what has been called the Battle of Puebla. The reason France was in Mexico in the first place was that Mexico, after the Mexican-American War and a more civil conflict called the Reform War, had bankrupted Mexico City. Mexican President at the time was Benito Juarez, who repudiated all foreign debt, of which France, Spain, and the United Kingdom were all major holders. Intended Consequences

(Intended Consequences) For those Readers who live in the Tri-State area, who had the earthquake this morning, just be still.  There is a postulate called the Law of Un-Intended Consequences. Basically, it says that even with the best intentions, negative results sometimes happen. However, there are also instances when a negative result is precisely the desired outcome. Like with the Israel- Hamas war where the Biden Administration continues to press for an all but unilateral ceasefire on the part of Israel. In California, the new $20/HR minimum wage is wreaking havoc on the fast food industry. And finally, after depleting the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, oil has now become too expensive. How many times must the Biden Administration think it can influence Israeli affairs ? How many times must Israel ignore it.
