Old Soldiers, , ,

(Old Soldiers. . .)

On April 19th, 1951, General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur delivered his farewell address to a Joint Session of Congress where he uttered what has become his epitaph: "Old Soldiers never die. They just fade away." Now this liberator of the Philippines, where he had triumphantly announced his "Return," and had been the one to accept the formal Japanese surrender, had been dismissed by President Truman after exceeding his authority as Supreme Allied Commander in the Korean War.

California Senator Diane Feinstein (D) can be considered another "Old Soldier" as she has been representing the Golden State for decades. And, like President Biden, there has been some evidence of her own cognitive decline and is recuperating from shingles. Feinstein has not been on the Senate Floor since February. That is presenting a problem with the rest of the Senate Democrat Caucus, To an extent, Diane Feinstein is like Jon Fetterman whose only role is to "vote" at the places indicated.

However, Senator Feinstein is sitting on the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee and her vote is needed to advance Biden's nominees. By and large, these are jurists that will be arguing for all Biden's Green Energy programs, invariably opposed by all Republicans. So, like Truman firing MacArthur, so Majority Leader Schumer would like the ability to move his California colleague aside and re-place her with someone with more faculty.

For her part, however, Feinstein has said she has no plans to quit, just yet. Once her condition improves, and, in any event, her Republican "friends" would not allow her outright replacement according to Senate Rules. The truth is that Senator Feinstein has become a liability for the Democrat Party and President Biden's agenda, especially his judicial nominees.

Republicans of the House and Senate variety are beginning to act as a team. They are holding the line on replacing Feinstein outright and are and Senate Republicans are finding themselves in agreement with the Debt Ceiling policies coming out of the House. In any event, both Conferences are beginning to see theirs' is a shared interest. Like keeping Senator Feinstein exactly where she is.
