Selling Sanctuary. . .

(Selling Sanctuary. . .)

To begin, one can say a word about the CNN town hall with former President Donald Trump. The gathering was meant to be "trap" of sorts where Trump was to be goaded into hysteria with accusations about that January 6th, or his persistence with the so-called "Big Lie." None of that happened and, because it apparently did not, consternation has arisen in certain media circles that the Trump appearance was a mistake to air in the first place. Showing Biden's predecessor in such a measured manner, a feat the current President would be unable to master. That being said, however, it must be remembered that the election of Joe Biden was the explicit repudiation of Trump and, while the border crisis is only escalating and Biden finances are coming under increasing scrutiny, Donald Trump will not be returning to the White House, regardless of how many times he goes on CNN. As that audience is limited to begin with, while the Town Hall was a ratings draw, from few to a few more is not significant.

In any event, the rock band, The Cult, had a hit in 1985 called "She Shares Sanctuary." As the illegal migrant surge endures, the traditional title of Sanctuary City has taken on a new meaning. The original idea was sufficiently humanitarian, but the underlying motivations were such that the promise of non-deportation that one could reside and live, assimilate, learn English and become members of society. The classic: "Give your homeless, hungry and poor," is a noble sentiment. The problem today is that they are coming all at once.

House Republicans have passed their own border control bill, which the President has said he would veto, Like the debt ceiling. But this intransigence cannot endure, Time has proven that issues like the border cannot be flown on a wing. Decisive policies, like completing the wall to start, are required. As that is something Trump would do, however, that concept is a non-starter, Thr former President might have had a good night on Cable News, but Biden is still President.
