In centuries past, Imperial China once floated a fleet of enormous warships that were comparable in size to the largest vessels currently at sea. These ships were marvels of sea-borne engineering and could sail vast distances and there is even some evidence that these ships perhaps sailed across the Pacific and might have even discovered the west coast of North America, long before any Europeans could approach from the east, However, the Emperor at the time had a nightmare. He ordered those ships burned and ended what could have been China's chance to colonize the world.


A new Chinese ship is making the news. As the pandemic has largely been revealed to have been a Wuhan spill, the Biden Administration is still getting played by Beijing with Secretary Blinken going back for some schooling and showing proper respect to Chinese "colleagues." But, let's examine this next piece of Chinese nautical technology.


Truth be told, what the Chinese are putting to sea could just as easily come from the pages of some Star Wars script. Lasers ? Rail guns ? Rocket launchers ? Even high-powered microwaves and not the kind that makes popcorn.  And by the way, it is nuclear powered. This is just Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. Or any other black and white serial.


Its array of armaments notwithstanding, how will it perform in combat ? Units of the U.S Seventh Fleet, with at least two aircraft carriers, several guided missile cruisers and destroyer, and an un-specified number of submarines. How with this new Chinese ship stack against the firepower that can be brought against it ?


In any event, the Chinese are referring to this as the "Big Step Forward." Last time it had been the "Great Leap Forward." That experience had been less than enjoyable for the Chinese people. See if this new boat can sail without immediately sinking.

TEQUILA !

(TEQUILA !) Happy Cinco de Mayo or May 5th. One can hope that a lot of you out there are awash in inebriation, seeking to mainline tequila shots or enjoying a nice margarita on the patio. Or, in other words, relax. Take a breath. De-compress. May 5th as it happens is the anniversary of Mexico's victory over French "occupation" of Mexico by Emperor Maximillian, brother to Austrian monarch Maria Theresa in what has been called the Battle of Puebla. The reason France was in Mexico in the first place was that Mexico, after the Mexican-American War and a more civil conflict called the Reform War, had bankrupted Mexico City. Mexican President at the time was Benito Juarez, who repudiated all foreign debt, of which France, Spain, and the United Kingdom were all major holders. Intended Consequences

(Intended Consequences) For those Readers who live in the Tri-State area, who had the earthquake this morning, just be still.  There is a postulate called the Law of Un-Intended Consequences. Basically, it says that even with the best intentions, negative results sometimes happen. However, there are also instances when a negative result is precisely the desired outcome. Like with the Israel- Hamas war where the Biden Administration continues to press for an all but unilateral ceasefire on the part of Israel. In California, the new $20/HR minimum wage is wreaking havoc on the fast food industry. And finally, after depleting the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, oil has now become too expensive.
