Cost-Benfit Analysis

(Cost-Benefit Analysis)

One must remember that, of all things, Donald Trump has always been a businessman. He had been a real estate mogul with his name on casinos, hotels, golf courses, and residential towers. Because of name recognition, NBC put the developer with his own reality TV show called The Apprentice that ran for 15 seasons. It had been a highly successful program. Then Donald Trump ran for President, which no one took seriously, but he won. Then came the pandemic, the 2020 Election, and with the various rule changes and voting gimmicks, Big Media, Big Money, and Big Tech were able to elevate Vice President Biden, who apparently was clueless at Maui when he visited briefly, to the White House.

But Donald Trump wants another shot. Millions of his supporters would give it to him. His immediate question, however, is whether he should participate in tomorrow's Republican Debate ? In other words, what is the cost-benefit for Trump to actually make an appearance in Milwaukee on Wednesday or stay distant. It has been suggested in these Pages that an appetence could be beneficial as his ultimate audience in the General Election will be beyond whatever support he might have with the core GOP. If he wants to broaden his support, and re-acquire all that left him two years ago, a higher profile could be useful.

However, all things being equal, the story of the week will not be what Republican said this or that, what candidate stood out and who had a so-called "good night," because, the day after, former President Trump will be arrested in Atlanta and this time he will be photographed. A mug shot. Bail will be set unless the district attorney asks Trump be remanded. Then watch all hell break loose.

There would be some benefit of a Trump show tomorrow. However, at this stage of the race, such Trump's participation is not really necessary. And, with a debate Wednesday and his arrest Thursday, the week will have become redundant for Trump and there will be certain people, those on the fringe of consideration, if they do knock one out of the park so to speak, those campaigns will begin to dry up and wither. What tomorrow will do more than anything would be to winnow the field. Donald Trump, for his part, can wait.
