Elephant NOT In The Room

(Elephant NOT In The Room)

With his own post-GOP Debate analysis, California Governor Gavin Newsome declared that President Biden was the clear winner, The other clear winner would probably have to be former President Trump, one who was not there. Of the seven surviving candidates, the general consensus is that none of them, emerging the day after, is that Trump will not be seriously in-convenienced.

The thing is that there was virtually nothing, policy wise at least, that Trump would dis-agree with.  He could have done without all the digs at him, Governor Christie calling Trump "Donald Duck." That was par for the course. But when it came to Bidenomics, crime, the border or even Ukraine, nothing was said that the former President would necessarily disagree with. That being said, there is the possibility that Trump's prospective running might have been on that stage. Probably with the exception of Trump's own Vice President, Mike Pence, who is polling at 5% and just qualified for his appearance.

Governor/Ambassador Nikki Haley had another good night. So did Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, while he was not able to deliver his own Trump counterpoint. Borgum or Christie or Ramsammy or Senator Scott. Politics makes for strange bedfellows and even with such venom being exchanged now, if Trump can come to an understanding with these current rivals and in time share the same stage as a new Trump-Whomever team.

If Donald Trump is to be kept off the campaign trail, he will need a partner who can go out and hold rallies in his place. Trump will need to give full power to speak in his name and lay out in detail what a prospective second Trump Administration might do. And, such things have happened before. Ronald Reagan selected his primary opponent, George H.W. Bush as his Vice President. And, of course, Barack Obama all but grabbled Joe Biden off the ash heap of history to make him his VEEP.

So, there was a fair amount of vitriol last Wednesday. But when one can see how the needs of the Party can be met. If Trump is the volatile character, a level-headed running mate should be able to provide balance. Make assurances to the public that can still be considered. That is not a universal opinion of course but if the prospective Republican Nominee wants to be considered beyond the Convention, he needs to begin securing endorsements. Like a running mate.
