Days Of Atonement

(Days Of Atonement)

The Yom Kippur (Days of Atonement) War was waged from October 6th till the 25th, 1973. In apparent commemoration of that event, there has been a massed rocket attack from Hamas controlled Gaza into the Israeli interior, In an escalation not seen in other conflicts, some 100 fatalities which is an un-precedented number have been registered since the barrage opened up this morning. Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has declared a state of war on the Palestinian terrorists that hold that strip of real estate along the Mediterranean coast.

The significance of these attacks taking place now is not by accident. The Yom Kippur war anniversary notwithstanding, one must remember that Hamas is an Iranian proxy, the same Islamic Republic to which the Biden Administration saw fit to spend $6 billion to Tehran in order to ransom Americans held there. But, one might add that the biggest threat to Hamas', and for that matter, Hezbollah's in Lebanon, is peace between the Jewish State and its nominally hostile Arab neighbors.

That was until the Abraham Accords between Israel and several Arab states but if Jerusalem and Riyadh of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can achieve their own reproachment, if the Saudis can recognize Israel and normalize relations, then the Iranian proxies will have lost their usefulness. As the reality of Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War had been the destruction of the Viet Cong so one can imagine that Hamas after this attack

Normalizing Israeli-Saudi relations would have the effect of isolating Iran from the Gulf States. It could be the West, Sunni Arabs, and Israel against Iran, Russia, China and North Korea. That is if Washington is up to the task. Back to the action at hand, Israel has the ability to do severe damage to Hamas up to and including the re-occupation of Gaza.

That being said, what remains of pan-Arab sympathy ? Will improved relations with Israel be extinguished for the sake of the Palestinians ? There is the sudden realization that the days of Chairman Yassir Arafat are gone and the anti-Zionist struggle is no longer the center of Arab affairs. The Arab world is collectively saying that the Jewish state has a right to exist and this spasm from Hamas could be the final chapter written of a struggle that has been underway since 1948.
