Start here. Poland used to be a powerful kingdom in commonwealth with Lithuania. Its "parliament," at the time was called the Sajim. which was composed of its nobility. Now, on the theory that men of good faith could agree on a policy, but the entire nobility had to agree, That was called the Liberum Veto and if a measure was no passed unanimously, it did not pass. The practice had the effect of paralyzing Warsaw to the point where Austria, Prussia and Russia partioned the Polish nation on three occasions, till it was finally absorbed into the Russian Empire.

The Republican Conference in the House of Representatives is operating as if it is operating with its own Liberum Veto where a handful of Republican Members are preventing any ascension to the Speakership as front-runner Congressman Jordan seems unable to conclude his election. The number of "Nays" is 22 at the moment. He could only lose four. If Jordan cannot secure the Gavel in any reasonable time, like before the next fiscal deadline in a few weeks, it would be an indication even with a Majority, Republicans cannot govern. As a stop-gap solution, Speaker Pro Tem, Patrick McHenry (R-NC) would remain at his post until someone more permanent could be placed. It should be noted that Minority Leader Jefferies received more votes than Jordan.

But this entry would not be complete without mentioning the President's trip to Israel. It had been suggested that Biden not make the trip in the sense that his presence could only confuse the situation. There was a significant mass-causality event when an errant Hamas missile hit a hospital with a loss of 500 or so lives. Biden also probably had the Gaza ground invasion postponed, again. In 1967's Six Day War, Israel struck pre-emptively, destroying most of the Arab air forces on the ground, rapidly gaining air superiority. In 1973, just before the Yom Kippur War, Tel Aviv vacillated, even though it was becoming clear that both Egypt and Syria were preparing to attack, the Egyptians had a successful attack into Sinai and it was only because Syria got into its own problems that forced a further penetration which was then repulsed by Israeli armor.

Wasn't Biden supposed to meet with Arab leaders in the region ? Leaders of Jordan, Egypt, and the West Bank Palestinian Authority, all declined his invitation. There is no clarity as to the position of Iran save for the fact no new sanctions will applied. Exactly how far Biden would be willing to go in Israel's defense. Displays of force do not necessarily equate to the use of force. The only one who needs to use force is the Israeli Defense Force to finally send the President back home.
