Beyond Fine Print

(Beyond Fine Print)

For the past several days, a so-called "Border Bill" was being debated in the Senate. Text to the measure, costing $118 billion in the end, has money for Ukraine, has money for Israel, and some $20 billion for the border. The details would seek to streamline the asylum process and would allow for the deportation of migrants, after a threshold of 4,000 entrants is reached.

Why allow anybody ? The House Bill, HR-2, the second measure this House passed this session, is their start point. Its threshold is for everybody to remain Mexico and complete the wall. So, the House measure is not compatible with the Bill now being presented in the Senate. Now, there is nothing new and when both Chambers dis-agree on a bill, a Conference Committee is convened and a final bill, that both houses can pass and then send to the President to sign it into Law.

Speaking of laws, there are statutes that have been in place that make it a crime to cross illegally. And what does any of this do about the cartels that run north Mexico and raking in billions in human and narcotics' smuggling ? The Biden Administration has chosen to ignore all that in the hope that the millions allowed access will one day vote Democrat.

The Senate Bill will not fundamentally alter the situation at the border. Slowing a flow is still a flow and cartels would still manage to send the same quantity and get paid. It can be said that these cartels had a symbiotic relationship with the Biden Administration because they both had shared goals.

However, the question can now be raised is what will happen if Trump gets elected ? As President, again, he would seek to implement HR-2. He would complete the wall. He would deport a fair share of illegal migrants. He would insist on "remain in Mexico" and he would also "encourage" Mexico City to deal with own migration problems from its southern border.

One way or another, this is a nation of immigrants. The admonitions on the Statue of Liberty about your "tired, poor, and those wanting to live free," is appropriate. The problem is getting everybody, from everywhere, and all at once.
