Famous Last Stands. . .

(Famous Last Stands. . .)

There have been many moments in history when something is so overwhelming that resistance seems futile. The three hundred Spartans that were felled at Thermopolye by a Persian horde of thousands, the tens of thousands of Gallic warriors that were beaten by Julius Caesar at Alesia, or the 185 Texians at the Alamo. Now, in joining this illustrious, if not ignominious, group, former South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley. has been staying in the Republican nominating process even though she is many points behind former President Trump. It is being seen by many, if not most, that Haley as no path to the Nomination and her continued participation is becoming less productive.

Haley is not running to Trump's Vice President but by the same token, she is the embodiment of the remaining anti-Trump element. They are so-called the big donors, the ones who are keeping her campaign financed. Will it matter ? Trump is so far ahead and in Haley's home state regardless, that there would be little utility in her continuation.

But and so the argument goes, what if something does happen to Trump ? Suppose he does get incarcerated at the end of some conviction ? Who will be available in that case ? If Trump is neutralized, which has been the plan from the beginning, there will be Ambassador Haley to the rescue. However, in her competition against Donald Trump, has she burned too many Republican bridges to recover ? If she is thinking of doing this again in a few years, will she have the support ?

In the immediate aftermath of his 2020 loss, one would have thought that he would have gone back into real estate or back onto The Apprentice. He was not supposed to run for the White House again and several prominent Republicans, Nikki Haley among them, took to the Trail under the assumption could not win a general election as well as he was doing in the Primary.

All that being said, Trump has prospered under the constant legal attacks and people have been realizing that President Biden is old and infirm and probably not fulfill a second term. National and State polling give the former President a slight edge over the current one. So, where would Nikki Haley fit in this context. Come tomorrow, the question will be answered.
