Pondering Of Ages. . .

(Pondering Of Ages.. . .)

In the Fifth Century, BCE, there was an Athenian statesman named Pericles. He lived during Athens' Golden Age before going to war with Sparta in the Peloponnesian War, which the Greek "experiment" in Democracy ultimately lost. Pericles himself perished when a plague ravaged the city. His legacy is profound, however because he made a comment about the nature of Athens and her Democracy:

"Future ages will ponder us as the present ponders us now."

He was right. Now, all these thousands of years later, ancient Greece and Pericles are still being disused. What is being pondered today in this country in the same manner by which Greece saw itself ? What is America seeing in the mirror these days ? Continued college unrest to the point where campus buildings are violated, student no longer feel safe all over the Isael-Hamas war whose actions are threatening to bring sanctions from the United States, the United Nations and even the International Court. Can one be more absurd ?

The Biden Administration is dealing with problems of his own making. The Democrat Party itself is split over the Israel-Palestine issue with not even tepid support for the Jewish state from the White House. On the Homefront, Bidenomics has been such a failure reflected at the anemic 1.6% GDP read from the other day. All that being said, leave it to the media to run cover for the President, who instructed as much at the White House Correspondents Dinner. And, of course, Donald Trump remains on trial, though it appears he will be able to attend Barron Trump's graduation.

What might Pericles think about today, or. putting it another way, how would he "ponder ?" What he think of the campus unrest and the inability to control it. What would become the State of Israel were experiencing the Babylonian Captivity, Pericles would see what had become of the Athenian experiment now threatened with the same authoritarian regime that Athens replaced. How would Pericles take Donald Trump's situation ?

There is the interval from Pericles to now. What people be pondering about now in the same interval in the future ?
