Leonid Brezhnev was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (try saying that really fast !) from 1964-1982. Brezhnev was able to take the Terror of Stalin and, with the Nikita Khrushchev interlude, Brezhnev was able to bring the Soviet Union into direct competition with the United States. He was also the author of the so-called "Brezhnev Doctrine," where Warsaw Pact, read "Soviet," forces could be introduced into "member countries," like Czechoslovakia in 1968 or Afghanistan in 1979. Also, Brezhnev negotiated the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Nixon Administration. In his later years, however, one could tell the General Secretary was declining. In his final months, Brezhnev's entourage would wake him, present him with some award, and then allow him to retire.


Leonid Brezhnev had a greater impact than Joe Biden ever could. But the President, if any recent coverage is an indication, cheap fake or not, that Biden will not be able to stand toe-to-toe with Donald Trump for 90 minutes. What is needed is a "reasonable facsimile to stand at the other podium. A crash-test dummy," in other words.


Now, the phrase "dummy" can be applied to the President in any number of ways, but who will be able to stand on stage ? If, come June 27th, and it is clear that Biden will be made a basket case in shorter, then Democrats might not have to wait till Chicago. With writing on the wall, it should be patently obvious that a replacement for the President would be needed. Biden, like Brezhnev, will be thanked for his service, given this award or that, and be put to bed.


The predictions made in the immediate aftermath of 2020 have failed spectacularly. Trump, were he to seek Office again, would need to recoup all those voters that abandoned him almost four years ago were not likely to return. President Biden, for his part had a very friendly Congress and the current House GOP Majority is one. In all likelihood, it flips again in the Fall. In the meantime, however, is that debate, Trump will be there but who might be there to face him ? President Biden ? Or some other crash test dummy ?

TEQUILA !

(TEQUILA !) Happy Cinco de Mayo or May 5th. One can hope that a lot of you out there are awash in inebriation, seeking to mainline tequila shots or enjoying a nice margarita on the patio. Or, in other words, relax. Take a breath. De-compress. Intended Consequences

(Intended Consequences) For those Readers who live in the Tri-State area, who had the earthquake this morning, just be still.  There is a postulate called the Law of Un-Intended Consequences. Basically, it says that even with the best intentions, negative results sometimes happen. However, there are also instances when a negative result is precisely the desired outcome. Like with the Israel- Hamas war where the Biden Administration continues to press for an all but unilateral ceasefire on the part of Israel.
