Good Ideas ?

All cultures throughout history have had to develop means of governing human behavior, relationships between the government and the people. Most of these come to common sense. For the Hebrews, it was Charlton Heston and dated Hollywood effects in the Cecil B. DeMille classic The Ten Commandments. Like, God is God, does not necessarily need a physical representation. It is a bad idea to take the Lord's Name in Vain, A Day of Sabbath should be observed. One should Honor ones parents. Do not commit murder. It also is a bad idea to step out on one's wife or steal. It is also a bad idea offer false witness against one's neighbor or to "covet."


Now, truth be told, no one adheres to any extent to any letter of the Ten Commandments but instead, these "rules" could be seen as a guide to proper behavior. But, as we all know, most people have bad behavior. So what ? The Ten Commandments, as most other religious symbols and banned from the public square. That had included public schools. Until now.


The State of Louisiana has won its Ten Commandments case and the precepts will now be posted in Bayou State schools. Display of the Document, however is not the same as endorsement. As mentioned, the Ten Commandments are a guide for behavior more than anything. That being said, the Louisiana Decision reverses a trend that has been decidedly anti-Christian over the years.


The problem is that "God" has competition. States organized on less ecclesiastical and a more secular regime. The Soviet Union executed many of its Catholics or Eastern Orthodox priests and bishops because there could be no alternative to Stalin, so to speak. In this country, however, people have a right as to how express their belief. Of course, this is not the end.


No public funds will be allocated by Baton Rouge and any Ten Commandment displays in schools will be privately donated. That is not sufficient for the ACLU, who are claiming that a Commandments viewing will be coercive for students. In any event, Louisiana has won something with this ruling. In the end, it is just a good idea.

TEQUILA !

(TEQUILA !) Happy Cinco de Mayo or May 5th. One can hope that a lot of you out there are awash in inebriation, seeking to mainline tequila shots or enjoying a nice margarita on the patio. Or, in other words, relax. Take a breath. De-compress. Intended Consequences

(Intended Consequences) For those Readers who live in the Tri-State area, who had the earthquake this morning, just be still.  There is a postulate called the Law of Un-Intended Consequences. Basically, it says that even with the best intentions, negative results sometimes happen. However, there are also instances when a negative result is precisely the desired outcome. Like with the Israel- Hamas war where the Biden Administration continues to press for an all but unilateral ceasefire on the part of Israel.
