On July 16th, 1945, the Trinity Test was conducted in the New Mexico desert, outside Alamogordo. The device, known as the "Gadget," had been set upon a steel tower and at 0529, the explosion was triggered, the first in history. The resulting yield was 21 kilotons. Now, anyone who sat through movie Oppenheimer, all three hours of it and emerged with a numb ass and stiff joints, and the depiction of Trinity itself underwhelming, discussing technical details becomes important.


The Gadget contained two hemispheres of Plutonium, set one on top of the other. To set of the Big Bang, explosive lenses would go off and compress, implode in other words, the two halves of fissile material to a point of "supercriticality." A chain reaction is started, sustained and Trinity goes off as the world's biggest firecracker.


However, what if some of the explosive's mis-fire ? The implosion is not symmetrical and no explosion takes place ? In one half of the plutonium. there is Donald Trump and the Republicans at the Convention. Ohio Senator J.D. Vance was named as Trump's running mate. Of course, Trump did survive the assassination attempt from over the weekend and that has apparently inspired the hundreds of GOP delegates. All the legal challenges appear to have been placed in abeyance. Vance is to give his address as Vice President tomorrow and of course, former President Trump will formally accept the Party Nomination come Thursday, with an altered speech.


Democrats on the other hand, who will convene in Chicago next month, are still having doubts as to the President's viability, though immediate plans to oust him have been tabled. In a new complication, New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez (D) has just been found guilty on all count in his corruption trial. Like Congressman George Santos (R-NY) that was expelled from the House for his own legal problems, Senate Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) has suggested that Menendez resign. Considering the narrow Democrat Senate Majority, Schumer, like Speaker McCarty at the time who let Santos go, so Schumer needs to determine his New Jersey colleague.


So, imagine that Trinity's assembly is flawed. One plutonium hemisphere is intact, and its explosives detonate as expected. That is Donald Trump and Republicans. What of the other hemisphere ? Its explosives failed to go off, and the wood-be compression to supercriticality is not achieved. The reaction fizzles. That is the Democrat Party.

(Keeping The Faith ?) Happy Memorial Day ! This is the day when the nation pauses and recognizes the contributions of the men and women that strove, and often times perished in the defense of this country. How many campaigns and battles have been seen over the years with Americans in harms way. Theirs was not a pursuit of glory, necessarily but they are remembered as such. As an example, take the Joe Rosenthal photo of the "Iwo Jima Flag-raising," February 23rd, 1945. Most people know what that is and not a few have a copy on their wall. Three of those Marines survived Iwo Jima and went on a bond tour to promote that picture. The U.S. was able to fund the rest of the War off of that drive but the Marines in question did not fare well. Siege Of The Alamo

(Siege Of The Alamo) Any visitor to Downtown San Antonio will recognize the City's most famous landmark, the Alamo. An old Spanish mission that means "Cottonwood" in English was the site where the likes of Jim Bowie, William Barrett Travis and Davy Crockett and about another 185 Texians defended the Mission and its compound for thirteen days against the Army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana and his 5,000 troops. The garrison was finally reduced on March 6, 1836. However, the Texian defeat at the Alamo and another one at Goliad, bought time for General Sam Houston time to fall back and then face Santa Ana at San Jacinto. There, Houston's army surprised the Mexicans and yelling "Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad !" all but wiped out the Mexican force.
