Millimeters. . .
(Millimeters. . .)
These Pages have been in publication for over fourteen years and today, there is a marked lack of words. Someone tried to assassinate Donald Trump for Christ sakes and if the round had migrated mere millimeters, today might have been Trump's obituary rather than still looking forward to the Republican Convention, convening in Milwaukee. So, who was the unlucky shot ?
His name is reported to be Thomas Mathew Crooks and his intent was apparently more involved than shooting at Trump. Explosives were found in his car. If that connected, however, Crooks would have achieved the same infamy as John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, or John Hinkley Jr, Instead, he will be remembered as the one who missed the former President.
That Crooks was in the area at all, that he had drawn a bead on Trump from only a couple hundred yards represents the other headline from the story. Crook's perch was across the street on the AGR Building. One cannot imagine sniper training, and that is why he missed. One hears of "never Trumpers" but this was ridiculous. In the end, Crooks was successfully engaged by a Secret Service sniper.
So, what happens now ? As of this morning, it is an entirely different race for President. The GOP Convention will proceed but much of the vitriol, from both sides. needs to be tamed. Advertising has been withdrawn. President Biden has been contact with President Trump and both have agreed to tone things down. Both men appreciated the call and promoted a new drive for "unity."
However, blood has been spilled, not just Trump's but other casualties as well. Crooks' motive has yet to be determined but it could be pre-mature to ascribe to any political philosophy. just close with this. Trump as he was being escorted off stage, he told the crowd to keep fighting.
The former President is off to Milwaukee to assume his role as the Republican Nominee. It would be instructional to know how close he came to fill a body bag.
