One can easily get confused. In the last Harris-Trump debate, the Vice President did well. For his part, former President Trump had an off night, a "catastrophic performance" according to some analysis. However, there has not been any sustained benefit for the Democrat. So, Harris wants to roll the dice again and confront Trump again. Trump is demurring because voting has already started. That had been the case with Senator Jon Fetterman. who had collapsed in his debate with Senator Dr. Oz but because so many Democrats had already voted, Fetterman was duly elected. Therefore, it would be of limited utility for Trump to engage when votes are being counted.


So, while Trump might or might not accede to another meeting with Harris, he will be going to the Al Smith dinner, by himself. Smith had been the Governor of New York State from 1923-1928. Later, he managed the Empire State Inc which had built the Empire State Building and was one of the building's first tenets. The Al Smith Dinner is a Catholic charity event held at the Walldorf Astoria. Traditionally, candidates from both Parties, Democrat and Republican attempt to "roast" each other. At times, the banter could be quite humorous, each candidate taking a stand at stand up.


But the dinner is not for the faint of heart. One needs the ability of self-deprecation or a sense of humor. Harris, because she is so manufactured and not given to spontaneous utterances, would flop at Al Smith as she would at any Bud Freeman venue. But Trump will be there. It is un-clear what format he might take one does get points for showing. That being said, if Harris cannot make an appearance, it will be one more that she cannot meet Trump in public.


The Vice President should known that one friendly ABC exercise would not be sufficient for the whole Campaign. She might be copying the Biden basement strategy for 2024 but without a pandemic, Harris will be forced more into the open. She will need to deliver more press conferences. She needs to work without a net. Having the campaign on automatic, that she will be elected by virtue of charm alone.


There is a risk for Harris more than for Trump. Trump has always been a public figure and can navigate those interactions. People will see more of Trump and allow him to identify Harris. What Trump will do at Al Smith. And see if it is funny ?

(Siege Of The Alamo) Any visitor to Downtown San Antonio will recognize the City's most famous landmark, the Alamo.
