Cast Away. . .
(Cast Away. . .)
Tom Hanks used to be funny. Bosom Buddies, Batchlor Party, Dragnet, Man With One Red Shoe, and of course, Splash. Then he did two Oscar worthy roles, Philadelphia and Forest Gump. Talented actor ? Sure, Then a few years ago, he did Cast Away, where a FedEx engineer whose plane crashed in a storm. He makes it to land. learns to survive, develops an un-healthy relationship with a volleyball. He does get rescued, eventually, but the whole thing was not very entertaining.
Like Tom Hanks, being marooned on that island. Senate Republican Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who will likely not be leader, Majority or Minority when the Republican Conference re-convenes next January, possibly as a new Majority, McConnell is being cast away, the same thing had been applied to President Biden who was also a cast away.
McConnell really has no right complain. He has always kept Trump at arm's length but made use of him to approve Trump's nominees. However, McConnell was not a supporter of Trump policy. He has never been MAGA and while the Senator has endorsed the former President, he was less helpful in legislative matters. When Senator Scott (R-FL) tried to oust McConnell over anemic GOP Midterm results, both Senators were at fault. However, this year, considerably more important than 2022, McConnell seems to be supporting Larry Hogan. the longshot in Delaware while letting Ted Cruz in Texas wither on the vine. If there is to be a Republican Senator to lose, it will probably be Senator Cruz. That is saying a lot. A State as red as Red as Texas, and Ted Cruz is the one in danger ?
Senator McConnell should be thanked for his years of service for the Bluegrass State. But McConnell has never been one to change with the time. He has appreciated the Senate as an institution, and he has served as both Majority and Minority. For him, the positions are interchangeable, as long as the Institution is preserved. While it is highly possible that it will be a new Republican Majority, McConnell has no interest on how large the margin could be. The Joe Manchin seat is a give away buy what about the races in Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, or Pennsylvania ? If Republicans can run the tables on all these races, it could be 56 Republicans or something of that nature. As that is so close to the Magic Number of 60, the President Trump, assuming he gets re-elected, will have that level to work with.
Senator McConnell will not be the leader of this happy party. It could fall to Senator Scott, or John Thune (R-ND), John Cornyn (R-TX) or any number of candidates. What is known is whomever takes that chair will be a partner to the new/old President.
