At its height, the Ottoman Empire was about the size of Rome. And, like Rome. over time internal decline and external threats whittled away Turkish territory till at the end, on the eve of the First World War, the Empire had been known as the Sick Man of Europe. That being said, there had been an effort to modernize Constantinople (Turkish Capitol) and rotate the absolute rule of the Sultan. A faction emerged called the Young Turks, a group of political insurgents that had wanted to arrest the Empire's decline.


Since then, the term "Young Turk" has been used to reflect any new direction as opposed to what had been standard, President-Elect Trump has been staffing his Administration with so-called Young Turks. One can begin with Vice-President-Elect J.D. Vance23. The current Senator from Ohio. The true rags to riches story, Vance spent some time in the Marines and graduated at the top of his class from Yale. In 2023 he was elected to the Senate from Ohio. Vance had been a critic of the now President-Elect, Trump so when Vance had been chosen as Trump's running-mate, the choice seemed curious for some, but now that he and Trump have been elected, that decision is paying dividends.


For Secretary of State, President-Elect Trump is apparently looking to Florida Senator, Marco Rubio. In the 2016 Campaign, both Trump and Rubio had been on the same debate stage. Trump had used the term "Little Marco" at the event. That was then. Now, the President-Elect is looking to fill Foggy Bottom with someone who is a supporter of Israel, will be in support of Homen's deportation efforts. Rubio will also be the Trump voice on the Ukraine. And all the other foreign policy crises that are globally abounding.


The Trump pick to run the Pentagon is something of a surprise. Pete Hegseth, an Army veteran and postings in Afghanistan, Iraq and even Guantanamo Bay. For the last ten years, Hegseth has been co-anchor on Fox News Weekend. He is active in veterans affairs, and if confirmed as the next Secretary of Defense, it will be a goal to remove any DEI tendencies. Hegseth would hope to improve recruiting and advocate for a larger standing Force.


These will be the big three departments in the Trump Administration. They are loyal, dedicated and will have to justify their performance. There are perhaps other people who could come with more experience but Vance, Rubio, and Hegseth also have one outstanding quality and the real reason for their selection.


They make Trump look good.

Keeping The Faith ?

(Keeping The Faith ?) Happy Memorial Day ! This is the day when the nation pauses and recognizes the contributions of the men and women that strove, and often times perished in the defense of this country. How many campaigns and battles have been seen over the years with Americans in harms way. Theirs was not a pursuit of glory, necessarily but they are remembered as such. As an example, take the Joe Rosenthal photo of the "Iwo Jima Flag-raising," February 23rd, 1945. Most people know what that is and not a few have a copy on their wall. Three of those Marines survived Iwo Jima and went on a bond tour to promote that picture. The U.S. was able to fund the rest of the War off of that drive but the Marines in question did not fare well. Siege Of The Alamo

(Siege Of The Alamo) Any visitor to Downtown San Antonio will recognize the City's most famous landmark, the Alamo. An old Spanish mission that means "Cottonwood" in English was the site where the likes of Jim Bowie, William Barrett Travis and Davy Crockett and about another 185 Texians defended the Mission and its compound for thirteen days against the Army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana and his 5,000 troops. The garrison was finally reduced on March 6, 1836. However, the Texian defeat at the Alamo and another one at Goliad, bought time for General Sam Houston time to fall back and then face Santa Ana at San Jacinto. There, Houston's army surprised the Mexicans and yelling "Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad !" all but wiped out the Mexican force.
