RE-Gifting A Fruitcake. . .

(RE-Gifting A Fruitcake. . .)

Happy post-Christmas ! December 26th is the day to come down off the hilarity from Yesterday. All the egg nogg, the hoarseness from caroling and the acres of wrapping paper and how to dispose of the tree. Also, it is highly possible that fruitcakes were exchanged, In modern contexts, a fruitcake is the equivalent to getting a lump of coal from Santa. Now the big guy has parked the Sleigh, the reindeer are out to pasture for the year so what remains, is fruitcake.

Fruitcake material has yet to be identified by modern science. It is very durable which explains how it can be, and often is, re-cycled. That does not make it palatable. Just as palatable is the dead-lock in the House of Representatives and its so-called GOP Majority and the faction that might not vote to re-elect Speaker Johnson back to the Gaval. That has to be done by January 3th and if the House cannot decide on a Speaker on time, or if Johnson is discarded, what will that do to the schedule ?

Before Donald Trump returns to the White House, the 2024 Election Results need to be certified by the House. However, if the powers that be deem a new Speaker, the resulting interval will persist so Trump might be at Inauguration Day without being declared by Congress. The truth is that these rituals have become tiresome.

As it would appear with many other things, the President-Elect will need to declare his preference for Johnson or not. In the final analysis, Trump might need to put the House on a leash, explaining that they're bickering will not be allowed frustrate the President. This will have to go beyond the Speaker selection. When the tax reform gets to the Floor, every Republican Member will need to support it.

Those who do not cooperate could receive a Primary challenge. The one thing of which one would be confident is the lack of courage of most politicians. That would necessarily include House Republicans. Whatever back-bone to be derived will come from President Trump. But there needs to be an understanding. This relationship is not equal. There is Separation of Power but set against a President Trump and his ideas there is no contest.

That being said, Trump still needs the House. It might be a subordinate relationship but if any legislation is to be passed, House Republicans have to coalesce and get Bills to the Senate and then to Trump's desk. Otherwise, they are just sending more fruitcake.
