Welcome To Washington. . .
(Welcome To Washington. . .)
As if on schedule, House Republicans and their enamel-thick Majority need to fund the government before Friday. A 1,547-page omnibus bill, with extra spending is being presented and, as usual, the Conference does not have the votes as GOP defections still materialize. Speaker Johnson will need Democrat votes to pass the measure or the government closes. It is a matter of course that Republicans will be blamed and they will be. This whole situation is not sitting well with Elon Musk.
Were the Tesla-SpaceX and X CEO in the House, he would be with the insurgent Members. Aa the World's Richest Man and one who is about to attack government in-efficiency, he has nothing on the U.S. House. Musk might be a newly minted Republican, a "Black MAGA" as he has put it, it is becoming clear that the greatest resistance to Trump's agenda will be coming from Republicans.
All throughout the Campaign, Doanld Trump has said he would be a Dictator, on Day One. But what will also be there on Day One will be the Continuing Resolution that would have been just passed. The government will have stayed open but at the cost of another episode of House "Majority" Republicans in-ability to function.
Aside from the funding fight is when will the Trump tax cuts be addressed ? If the two Chambers under nominal Republican control cannot quickly coalesce around a plan to advance the tax legislation, get the Bill written, pass it out of both House and Senate Committees and reconcile the text that can be sent to President Trump, and before Independence Day. If not ?
It is recognized that Republicans have only two years to pass out the Trump agenda. If they are not successful, in all likelihood Republicans will lose the House and that would allow Democrats to impeach Trump, again. So, while there might some optimism as what might be done the so-called "window" is narrow.
Elon Musk is like a country boy who just arrived in the big city. Like in any case the experience can be over-whelming. Musk is by no means naïve but he might not have been totally aware of the real state of dis-function in the Nation's Capitol. If there is any silver lining, much of the spending that gets passed this week could be withdrawn in Trump's Administration.
