Welcome to the first day of Winter. This is no Richard III making glorious summer by that son of York. In a part of the year when one can look forward to Glad Tidings, Today is the shortest one of the year.as the Winter Solstice and there is advantage to this as the news, here and overseas has been grim.


In the ancient German city of Magdeburg, during an open Christmas Market, a man ran his car through some shopping patrons, killing five and wounding some two hundred others. The suspect is 50-year-old Saudi Doctor. He plowed his vehicle some four hundred yards into the crowd. The attack was terrible and is probably terrorist-inspired.


In this country, the Government avoided a shut-down and if there is good news, the bill that made it to Biden's desk for his signature to keep the government in operation till March was reduced in size from a fourteen hundred page plus to just some 120 pages that funds essentials for the time being. But the Bill, though the margin was 366+, some 34 Republicans voted "No."


President-Elect Trump, along with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy weighed in and brought the measure to something more reasonable but how might he intend to advance his agenda if so many of his own Party are not willing to cooperate ? And where is President Biden ? Technically he is still in Office but his input has been lacking.


Not everyone was happy with this latest stop gap. The can is being kicked down the road and next Spring the process renews. It will be a new Congress by that time and President Trump could have a more friendly Capitol Hill. However, the team is not set. His needed support has yet to materialize. As the phrase goes, Washington is writing checks the body can't cash. Literally.

(Keeping The Faith ?) Happy Memorial Day ! This is the day when the nation pauses and recognizes the contributions of the men and women that strove, and often times perished in the defense of this country. How many campaigns and battles have been seen over the years with Americans in harms way. Theirs was not a pursuit of glory, necessarily but they are remembered as such. As an example, take the Joe Rosenthal photo of the "Iwo Jima Flag-raising," February 23rd, 1945. Most people know what that is and not a few have a copy on their wall. Three of those Marines survived Iwo Jima and went on a bond tour to promote that picture. The U.S. was able to fund the rest of the War off of that drive but the Marines in question did not fare well. Siege Of The Alamo

(Siege Of The Alamo) Any visitor to Downtown San Antonio will recognize the City's most famous landmark, the Alamo. An old Spanish mission that means "Cottonwood" in English was the site where the likes of Jim Bowie, William Barrett Travis and Davy Crockett and about another 185 Texians defended the Mission and its compound for thirteen days against the Army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana and his 5,000 troops. The garrison was finally reduced on March 6, 1836. However, the Texian defeat at the Alamo and another one at Goliad, bought time for General Sam Houston time to fall back and then face Santa Ana at San Jacinto. There, Houston's army surprised the Mexicans and yelling "Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad !" all but wiped out the Mexican force.
