Feels Like The First Time. . .
(Feels Like The First Time. . .)
One of the first hits from Foreigner from their 1978 debut. Or it is Donald Trump and the imminent Swearing the Oath of Office.
The "Interference Candidate." That was what these Pages referred to the President-Elect, in entry penned in June 2015. The Trump candidacy was not taken seriously and, at the time it was believed that the developer and TV star and would do nothing but detract from more legitimate GOP contenders like Jeb Bush or Rick Perry. Trump was a showman and in many respects still is.
It was somewhat of a surprise to see his Election in 2016. What was not a surprise was the immediate resistance that formed. The Washington POST went as far as asking when the impeachment would begin ? As time went on and the House flipped, President Trump was impeached, twice and even a third time in the aftermath of the January 6th "insurrection."
Once exited Washington and "returned" to private life, his political epitaph was necessarily written. A recovery that would gain him back the White House was seen as not possible. All the voters he had in 2016 but lost in 2020 had to be made up and that was extremely un-likely. That being said, in November 2022, the former President announced he wanted to be future President. Monday, the circle will be complete.
In contrast to four years ago, when Trump takes the Oath this time and the slew of Executive Orders that is expected to follow, the feel is different this time. His Cabinet selections, assuming they all get confirmed like people for his business. Donald Trump, in or out of the White House, is at heart a New York developer.
It is true that Trump's resurrection is the greatest in history. But President Trump 2.0 would not be possible without President Biden 1.0. As Trump left in 2021, his advice to President Biden was to go to the beach. But President Biden was told he could do great things, the most consequential President since LBJ and maybe even FDR. In his diminished capacity, Biden perhaps believed it.
Biden policies that were the cause of inflation, the border and everything that mis-fired abroad, like Afghanistan, but President Biden seemed willing to impose costs to the American people in the expectation that, for the good of the Planet, these costs would be willingly endured. The answer is being sworn in tomorrow.
