Wilderness Campaign

(Wilderness Campaign)

Two days in May, 1864, the Union Army of the Potomac under General Ulysses S. Grant faced off against the Rebel Army of Northern Virginia with General Robert E. Lee in command. The action was indecisive but some 29,000 casualties were incurred by both sides. Since then, the term "wilderness" has come to mean some kind of exile or political banishment. That was President Trump, 1.0, when he had been discarded.  Democrats ran the tables that year and had a couple of moderate Senators not played ball, the plan had been to nationalize voting, eliminate the Senate filibuster, make Puerto Rico and D.C, new states with four new reliably Democrat legislators where the Biden Agenda could be passed by simple Majority. No body would ever vote for a Republican again.

Now, just four years later, it is the Democrat Party that is entering the wilderness. Joe Biden, as President, was to be a figurehead only as the Senate with its acquired powers would make the Executive, especially with President Biden and what had been known at the time of his condition, would have been wholly un-necessary and there would have been no debate with Donald Trump because Trump would not have been there.

But the Democrat Senate did not get that expansion of power, Biden had to act as President and when he faced the former President last July, the illusion could no longer be maintained. The resulting coup and the installation of Vice President Harris followed. As she was unable to defeat Trump, the former President is now the current President.

Four years ago, Donalds Trump was blamed for an attempted coup of his own. He was charged on numerous occasions with insurrection and the effort to reverse the 2020 Decision. That case was litigated in Georgia and elsewhere. Each case failed. Now that Trump is back in the White House, all Democrars can do at this point complains, and through tantrums. Like Democrat behavior and lack of decorum at Trump address to the Joint Session of Congress last Tuesday.

Democrats in 2025 have it worse than Republicans in 2021. In 2021, out-going Trump was still the leader of the Republican Party and served as a focal point for the GOP. When Trump renewed his campaign in 2022, the Party could come to his rally, literally. Democrats do not have that option. Not only is a new leader not available but too much of the Party remains "woke."

There is remaining conventional wisdom that a resurgence could come in 2026 as an out Party makes Mid-Term gains. That being said, if Democrats stay in this necrotic condition, such gains could prove illusory.
