(Races To The Sea. . .) Since the "Guns of August" opened up on the Western Front in 1914, the German Army had been marching, first through Belgium and then through France. The British and French armies were steadily forced south. It was decided for the Allies to make a stand on the Marne River. On September 6th-12th, in the First Battle of the Marne, the Germans were halted and forced to withdraw. What followed was what is called the "Race to the Sea." As the Germans fell back, the Allies attempted in turn to turn the German flank and the Germans tried to do the same. Both efforts came to a halt when the English Channel was reached. Over the next three years or so, a system of trenches developed in a line that stretched some 475 miles from the Channel to the Swiss Border. What does any of this have to do with anything ?
